Meet the Speaker: Nancy Lyons

nancy_lyons_1x

Nancy Lyons is one of the top entrepreneurial minds in Minneapolis. She’s a leader and a technologist, with a healthy balance of strategic thinking, thoughtful actions, and community involvement. She is the CEO and co-founder of Clockwork, a top Minneapolis technology firm, the co-author of Interactive Project Management: Pixels, People, and Process, and co-founder of Geek Girls Guide, an online outlet where she shares perspectives on the Interactive industry and demystifies technology for non-technical audiences.

Nancy’s philosophy on life and technology is one that will resonate with anyone in the industry, whether you’re a freelancer just starting out or an established agency owner: “Think strategically, act thoughtfully, be a good human.”

We’re excited to welcome Nancy to Prestige Conference Minneapolis 2015, where she will be speaking about Technology’s Dirty Little Secret. Get to know her before the event through our brief interview below.

In 3 sentences or less, please describe what you do for a living:

I am the co-founder and CEO of Clockwork - a Minneapolis based technology firm specializing in web and mobile application strategy/design/development for business. We solve business problems with people-first technology.

Why this career and not something else?

When I started there were more nerds than nerd herders. There was room for me.

Once you figured out where you wanted your career to go, how did you start making things happen?

Hard work. Solid relationships. Keeping promises. Being honest. Laughing a lot. Not taking no for an answer. Not letting other people’s fear become mine.

What were some of the biggest roadblocks you encountered in your career?

When I started digital wasn’t really a thing — it was not taken all that seriously. Getting people to think about it seriously as an extension of business and as having impact on the bottom line was tough. Now — we are digital first and in all things. It’s a very different climate now.

In addition to technology topics, you also speak frequently on diversity topics. What progress have you seen within the industry in the past few years?

The biggest progress has been around a willingness to acknowledge gender and racial disparity in the first place. And a real desire to address it. I think it’s a brave thing for an entire industry to admit failings and to work, collaboratively, to turn that around. To explore where and how to be more inclusive and welcoming and helpful. And to acknowledge that the work is better when we open it up to a broader contribution of talent and perspectives.

Over the years, who have been your most valuable mentors and how did you connect with them?

Industry professionals. Women in my CEO roundtable group. My business partners. My colleagues. I am fortunate to be surrounded by teachers and mentors and I never take that for granted.

What’s coming up next for you?

Clockwork is a constantly evolving cultural gem full of wildly talented humans. We’ve got some great new clients in the works.

I might be working on another book.

Any industry predictions for 2016?

Yes. So many. :)

Hopefully you’ll elaborate more at Prestige. Speaking of, what’s something you’re looking forward to about the conference?

Friendly nerd faces. Great conversation. Learning new things. Meeting new geniuses.

What books are you reading right now?

Women In Tech Scholarships Available for Prestige Las Vegas

Simply stated, there aren’t enough women in technology. According to CompTIA, only 24% of US IT professionals are female.

Women Who Code
Women Who Code aim to change this trend - their goal is to connect 1 million women in tech careers.

More Women In Tech Are Needed

Burning Glass Technologies Labor Insights reported over 500,000 IT job openings were available in the US in the last quarter of 2013. That’s half a million jobs in areas such as cyber security, web design, network management, data analysis, and software development.

This gender inequality is also present within the WordPress community. We’re seeing more women attend and even speak at these events, but they still make up less than half of the audience. How do we change this under-representation?

More Women In Tech Benefit Everyone

Diversity of skills and backgrounds can only benefit the WordPress ecosystem. New eyes on projects, fresh perspectives, and different communication styles can help move us forward by leaps and bounds. As part of our goal to encourage audience diversity, we’re excited to partner with MailChimp to offer five scholarships to our Las Vegas conference February 27-28, 2015.

We Want To See More Women At Prestige Conference

Knowing what we do about the typical gender ratio that happens at tech conferences, we’re trying to encourage more women to attend our events. One way we’re doing this is by inviting female industry leaders to speak at every conference we put on. Another way we’re encouraging women to participate at our Las Vegas event is through our partnership with MailChimp to provide scholarships for women in tech.

Each scholarship covers one full conference pass (up to a $199 value). You’ll receive access to the Friday night Expert Business Panel, all Saturday Speaker sessions, lunch, and the infamous Prestige Conference After Party.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Friday, January 9th, 2015. Head on over to our MailChimp Scholarship Page to submit your application now.

We’re Investing in the Future of Technology - Our Daughters

Alexis

This is Alexis. She’s my daughter, and along with my beautiful wife Sonya, she’s my world. She’s precocious, rambunctious, incredibly intelligent, and interested in every technology she can get her hands on (surprise!). She loves to put on her own headphones, grab her play laptop and “work with daddy.” I know being a developer would give her a great life, so I want to do everything I can to prepare her for that life if she decides she wants it.

Yesterday, we announced that we’ve agreed to give a portion of our proceeds to an amazing organization doing great things for veterans and WordPress, Happy Joe. It fits perfectly because Kiko has a passion for helping veterans, and James Dalman is doing great things for Veterans with WordPress.

My daughter was weighing heavy on my mind when deciding what organization my portion of the charitable gift would go to. I asked my Minneapolis developer friends what the *best* organization was that is teaching young women to code. It was a loud and unanimous recommendation: Katie CoderDojo. This organization is run by Rebecca Schatz, and they are helping an entire generation of teen girls learn to love code. Rebecca is an incredible, passionate woman who has a love for programming and kids. It’s a perfect fit for our vision and we can make a real difference in the lives of young women in Minneapolis.
